Affordable Housing in Los Angeles

Yesterday, we had a CORO session about affordable housing and economic development. It was a site visit of the NEW offices (New Economics for Women). An hour before the session, I realized that the address for the office was one block away from my apartment! I learned that my neighborhood is one of the most densely packed neighborhoods in Los Angeles. My building is surrounded by two affordable housing properties that have made a tremendous impact on the community. These housing units often have great communal spaces, and some have their own charter schools within the property. I always talk about how people should get to know their neighborhoods, but I don’t think I’ve done that enough! It was great learning about affordable housing in Los Angeles. It gave me some great insight into some of the issues Los Angeles faces. Like our panelist, Ralph from theĀ California Community Economic Development Association (CCEDA) said, ‘Los Angeles is a great city, but it has some major quality of life issues.’
